Rover of the Day: John Nibloe

1 June 2020

John Nibloe born June 1, 1939.

The son of a Scottish International, striker John started at Sheffield United, helping them earn promotion to Division One in 1960-61. After joining Stoke City for a year, he signed for Rovers in September 1962, making his debut on September 29 in a 4-2 home win over Oxford United in which he scored.

He went on to score in each of his first four league games for Rovers, but thereafter the goals dried up and he missed much of the second half of the season due to injury. He struggled for a regular place the following season and joined Stockport County in July 1964. His record for Rovers was eight goals in 43 appearances. On November 29 1964, when driving home to Sheffield after playing for Stockport at Newport, John was killed in a car accident. Rovers and Stockport played a joint testimonial match to raise funds for his bereaved family.
