Rover of the Day: John Regan

18 June 2020

John Regan born June 18 1944

Worcester-born John scored on his top-flight debut for Birmingham City against Manchester City in October 1962. He failed to earn a regular place at St. Andrew’s and moved on to Shrewsbury Town, Brentford and Crewe Alexandra.

The striker signed for Rovers in September 1968. Although initially finding goals hard to come by, he prospered after Steve Briggs joined from Leeds United in February 1969. In their first game together, Rovers beat Aldershot 7-0, and this set the team on the way to the Fourth Division title.

In 1969-70 John was top scorer with 13 goals but in January 1971 he left to play in South Africa. Later he played for Bromsgrove Rovers.

His record was 27 goals in 108 appearances.
