Rovers’ Youth Development Phase goalkeepers enjoyed a first team experience during half-term as they headed to the training ground at Cantley Park for a two hour training session.

The session was taken by head of Academy goalkeeping Steve Hernandez and first team goalkeeping coach Paul Gerrard. The training mirrored the first-team experience, using their facilities and operating a technical session to give the youngsters a clear view of the pathway.

Gerrard said: “Steve and I thought it would be a good idea to get the young goalkeepers to come in so I could cast my eye over them to see how they are getting on.”

“It’s important for our young players to see a clear pathway to the first team - if they are good enough, they will go through the levels and hopefully play for the first team one day.

“We made the session quite enjoyable but also informative and they were lucky enough to get a picture with Seny Dieng, Louis Jones, and U18s goalkeepers Ben Bottomley.”

Hernandez added: “We are working together to give young goalkeepers the best opportunity possible.

“This shows a clear sign of togetherness within the goalkeeping department at Rovers and shows the route from the Foundation Phase all the way to senior level.

“The feedback back from the goalkeepers and parent was excellent and the boys really enjoyed having the opportunity to work with Paul and be around the first team environment.”
