Rover of the Day: Jackie Thompson

Jackie Thompson born on March 21.

Jackie was born in Cramlington in Northumberland in 1915. In 1933 he joined Sheffield Wednesday from Blyth Spartans and went on to spend 13 years at Hillsborough, although several of these were lost to World War Two.

In May 1946 he signed for Rovers and made his debut on 31st August 1946 in a 2-1 home win over Rochdale. He went on to score 12 goals in 32 League appearances that season, winning a Division Three (North) Champions medal in a record-breaking season.

He was a regular in Rovers’ unsuccessful Division Two campaign in 1947-48 before moving on to Chesterfield in July 1948. For Rovers he made 61 senior appearances, scoring 18 goals. He died in 1996, aged 81.
