Rovers U23s 6 Scunthorpe United reserves 1

3 March 2020

Rovers’ U23s side continued their recent good form with a 6-1 win over Scunthorpe United reserves at Cantley Park.

Two goals from Junior Smith along with strikes from Matty Blair, Jack Watson, Jason Lokilo and Rieves Boocock did the damage for Gary McSheffrey’s side.

Rovers took the lead after 16 minutes when Blair met Branden Horton’s cross from the left to nod past Adam Kelsey from six yards out.

The lead was doubled just past the half-hour mark when Watson volleyed home, before Smith got his first of the afternoon when he followed up after Blair headed against the bar to make it 3-0.

Scunthorpe then scored the goal of the game straight from the restart, as former Barnsley winger Adam Hammill caught the Rovers’ keeper out and found the net from the half-way line.

Rovers continued to assert their dominance in the second period though and Smith had his second when his shot on the turn found the top corner.

Lokilo was at the heart of everything his side did well and he got himself on the scoresheet with a quarter of the game remaining, as his ball into the box found the bottom corner.

The scoring was complete late on when Boocock found space in behind the Iron defence and finished expertly beyond Kelsey.
