Rover of the Day: Don O’Riordan

14 May 2020

Don O’Riordan born May 14, 1957

Dubliner Don played more than 550 Football League games in a long career but only two of them were for Rovers.

These came in January and February 1978 when the defender joined on loan from Derby County. His debut could hardly have been less auspicious as Rovers were beaten 6-0 at eventual Division Four Champions Watford. A week later he played in a 1-0 home win over Stockport County but opportunities to play again were hampered by fixture postponements.

At the end of the season he left Derby to sign for Tulsa Roughnecks in the USA but returned a year later to join Preston North End, where he played over 150 games. In all he played League football for ten clubs, being player-manager at Torquay United. He now works as a coach.
