20 May 2020

George McGhee born 20th May, 1883

The son of a clergyman, George was a schoolteacher who played football as an amateur.

In January 1905 he joined Rovers, who were struggling at the foot of League Division Two. He made an instant impression, scoring on his debut in a 3-0 home win over Leicester Fosse, only Rovers second win of the campaign. He went on to score three goals in eleven appearances, making him joint top-scorer.

The following season George made two League appearances for Gainsborough Trinity and later, when his teaching career took him to Southampton, he represented the Saints in the Southern League. He died in 1944, aged 61
