Rover of the Day: Graeme Lee

31 May 2020

Graeme Lee born on May 31, 1978.

Middlesbrough-born Graeme, or “Spike” as he was known to his team-mates, played over 200 League games for Hartlepool United, his first club, helping them earn promotion from Division Three in 2003. That same year he moved to Sheffield Wednesday, where he was elected player of the season by supporters.

In January 2006 he signed for Rovers for £50,000 and made an immediate impression, scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory at Scunthorpe United. A powerful central-defender with a good eye for goal, he soon became Rovers captain and led the team to victory in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in April 2006, scoring the winning goal in Extra Time as Rovers beat Bristol Rovers at the Millennium Stadium.

He missed much of the 2007-08 season due to injury, leaving at the end of the season to join Bradford City. His Rovers record was 70 appearances and six goals.
