Sean Thornton, born May 18, 1983.

Drogheda-born attacking midfielder Sean played for Tranmere Rovers and Sunderland before signing for Rovers for £175,000 in July 2005.

Despite suffering an early ankle injury, his performances in the League Cup matches against Aston Villa and Arsenal really caught the eye. He scored a superb goal as Rovers beat Villa 3-0 before eventually losing in heart-breaking circumstances to Arsenal in the quarter-finals. The following season his appearances were limited, but he did play an important role in Rovers’ capture of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

In the Final at Cardiff he replaced the injured J. J. Price and swung over the corner from which Graeme Lee headed the winning goal in a 3-2 victory over Bristol Rovers. He left Rovers at the end of the season and had three seasons at Leyton Orient before playing semi-professional football in Wales and Ireland.
