Rover of the Day: Steve Humphries

29 May 2020

Steve Humphries born on May 29, 1961.

An older brother of Rovers’ defender Glenn, goalkeeper Steve began his football career as a youth player at Leicester City but left without making a senior appearance.

After playing for Vancouver Whitecaps he joined Rovers in July 1981 as cover for Willie Boyd. He made his debut on 18th August 1981, coming on as substitute for Boyd in a League Group Cup game against Chesterfield. This was the first time a Rovers goalkeeper had been replaced by a specialist in that position.

He went on to make 17 appearances for Rovers in 1981-82, many of them alongside his brother, but was released following the return of Dennis Peacock in the summer of 1982.

He subsequently played for Cardiff City and Wrexham as well as numerous non-League sides and won an England Semi-Professional cap in 1987 while playing for Barnet.
