PREVIEW | Wigan Athletic vs Rovers

Rovers travel to take on Wigan Athletic in Sky Bet League One this weekend. 

Darren Moore’s side have won two of their opening three league games, including a 4-1 victory over Bristol Rovers last time out. 

Goals from Joe Wright, Madger Gomes, Taylor Richards and Jon Taylor secured all three points at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Wigan’s form 

The Latics have won just one of their opening three league games, with that coming in their last outing away at Portsmouth. Goals from Lee Evans and Tom James secured a crucial three points at Fratton Park. 

They were beaten on the opening day by Ipswich Town, before losing 3-2 to Gillingham in their only home league game so far.  

 

The man in charge 

Former Rovers midfielder John Sheridan was appointed as the club’s new manager on the eve of the new campaign after a spell managing in Ireland. 

The former Oldham and Chesterfield boss replaced Paul Cook, who left the club after their relegation back to Sky Bet League One. 

 

Ones to watch 

Kal Naismith 

The versatile midfielder arrived at the DW Stadium from fellow Sky Bet League One side Portsmouth in the summer of 2018, at the end of a campaign where he had ended up playing in goal for Pompey against Rovers in a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park. 

A product of the Rangers youth setup, Naismith spent time on loan with Cowdenbeath and Partick Thistle before a permanent move to Accrington Stanley in 2013. He spent two years with Stanley before helping to Portsmouth to promotion to Sky Bet League One. 

 

Gary Roberts 

The 36-year-old arrived at the DW Stadium in 2017 after linking back up with former manager Paul Cook, who he worked with at Portsmouth and Chesterfield.  

Roberts has a wealth of experience throughout the EFL after spells with Ipswich, Crewe, Huddersfield and Swindon before re-uniting with his former team mate at the Proact in 2013. His knowhow will be valuable for the Latics this season as they continue to rely on youngsters alongside Roberts. 

 

Joe Garner 

After being released from the Blackburn Rovers academy, Garner made his name in the EFL with Carlisle United. His goals at Brunton Park earned hi a move to Nottingham Forest in 2008, after their promotion back to the second tier. 

After finding regular game-time at the City Ground hard to come by, Garner had loans spells with Huddersfield Town and Scunthorpe United before a permanent switch to Watford in 2011.  He moved to Preston two years later and found his goalscoring touch once more, netting 57 times for North End in three seasons at the club. He joined Wigan in the summer of 2018 after a year with Ipswich, and is still one of the most prolific scorers at Sky Bet League One level. 

 

Last time out 

The two sides last met in the final game of the 2017/18 Sky Bet League One season, where a 1-0 win for the Latics thanks to Will Grigg’s second-half goal saw them lift the title at the Keepmoat Stadium.
