Honesty the best policy for Smith

16 April 2021

Matt Smith says the Rovers squad have been honest with each other as they look to get back to winning ways against Shrewsbury Town this weekend.

Rovers have lost their past five games in Sky Bet League One, and Smith believes they have to keep believing that their form will turn sooner rather than later.

He said: “It’s been a very frustrating spell, we’ve struggled to take many positives from the run we’ve been on apart from the first-half on Tuesday.

“Every time you step onto a football pitch there is something to play for, and at times it has been embarrassing for us.

“We’ve spoken honestly with each other about getting the basics right and building from that, if you don’t get those right then you can’t expect to win any game.”

Rovers head to Montgomery Waters Meadow looking to avenge a 1-0 defeat to the Shrews in December, and Smith is expecting another tough game.

He added: “It will be another difficult game, teams at this stage of the season are all desperate for three points and we have to be up for the fight.

“When we played them at home they made it hard to break them down and that is something we have to try and work a way around.

“They are strong defensively and considering where they are in the table haven’t lost too many games.”
