Sims: we couldn't build on bright start

14 April 2021

Josh Sims says Rovers were disappointed they couldn’t capitalise on a positive first-half display against Burton Albion in Sky Bet League One.

Despite starting brightly at the Keepmoat Stadium, Rovers were undone by second-half goals from Lucas Akins, Tom Hamer and Hayden Carter for the Brewers.

He said: “I thought we were better in the first-half than we have been recently, but it was really disappointing to concede the goals that we did.

“We need a break of the ball which we didn’t get with the goal being disallowed, and then they punished us after half-time.

“As soon as we went a goal down the heads dropped and once that happens it is easy for the game to get away from you.”

After a change of system saw Rovers line-up in 4-4-2 formation, Sims felt the alteration worked in the opening 45 minutes.

He said: “It’s the first time we’ve played in a different system and I think it worked, we were better on the ball but we couldn’t build on it.

“We can’t hide away from some of the soft goals we’ve conceded, it makes it more frustrating when chances aren’t flowing at the other end.

“For us as players we need to repay the manager’s faith in us, we got off to a good start under him but we haven’t been good enough since then.”
