McSheffrey calls for consistency

U18s manager Gary McSheffrey has called for his team to be more consistent as they fell to defeat against Grimsby Town.

A goal either side of the half for The Mariners saw them come away from Cantley Park with three points.

On the U18s performance...

“Grimsby had some technically gifted players who were more comfortable on the ball than us.

“They physically bullied us. We know what we need to improve on and what we need to work on in the coming weeks.

“We didn’t have the ball for long periods and if that’s the case, our pressing is never going to be at the intensity we want it to be.

“We changed at half-time because I wanted to get an extra attacker on who could deal with the ball. Before that, we’re playing with a back three and collectively they were all not good enough on the ball. Then when we did change to two centre backs, we looked too open.

“We lacked technical decision making. We concede from a set play and an individual error and they win 2-0. It was a comfortable win for them, but they haven’t opened us up. Grimsby’s game management was really good.”

On Michael Nesbitt and Owen Scattergood’s injuries…

“We have to deal with these things.

“Michael has rolled his ankle in the warm-up and Scatts has got a swollen ankle after being kicked in the early moments of the game.

“We did not have enough attacking power on the bench to make an impact today. Hopefully next week we have a few more experienced attackers back with us.”
