Ross Joyce will be the referee in charge for Rovers’ League One fixture against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Joyce took charge of one of Rovers’ league game last season - a 2-1 win at home against Portsmouth.
In the game he gave out five yellow cards - two for Rovers and three for Pompey. John Marquis was among those booked for the visitors.
Joyce has never refereed the Owls, who have been playing in the Championship while Joyce refs in Sky Bet League One and Two.
The official took charge of his first game of the season on Tuesday when he oversaw a Carabao Cup match between Mansfield and Preston North End. Saturday will be his first league outing this season.
He sent one player off last season (on the opening day) – handing the red card to Accrington Stanley’s Dion Charles.
On Saturday, he will be assisted by Joe Clark and Paul Newhouse. Matthew Smith will be the fourth official.
