Wellens: Fans will make the difference

20 August 2021

Richie Wellens believes the fans can have a massive impact on Saturday as Rovers prepare to face Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One.

His side return to the Keepmoat Stadium after three consecutive away games and the manager says having thousands of voices cheering them on will be a big boost for the players.

On the importance of fans:

“The supporters are going to be so vital for us – we know we need to give them something to shout about – but they’re going to be massive.

“We need some confidence and a pick-me-up, and the crowd can do that.

“I need them for my confidence and the team need them too.

“We’ll encourage the players but I’m one voice. Noel Hunt is one voice and James Coppinger is another voice. When the players have got thousands of voices encouraging them on, that can take them a lot further than the three of us can.”

On Danny Cowley and Portsmouth:

“Danny and Nicky Cowley are two people I’m doing my Pro License with. I’ve got a lot of time for them. They’re good lads, good company and obviously know football really well.

“There’s one obvious threat in their team and we all know him because he’s been here at this club and that’s John Marquis. He’ll run and if he gets chances he’ll score.

“Ryan Tunnicliffe scored the winner against Shrewsbury and has played a lot in the Championship so he’ll be a threat too.

“They’ve got a solid base of players and they're a big club.”
