Wellens looks ahead to Stoke test

23 August 2021

Richie Wellens spoke to the media ahead of the Carabao Cup second round tie against Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City on Tuesday night.

Rovers face the Potters having beaten Walsall on penalties in the first round earlier in August.

On what he expects from the game:

“I’m going to go there relaxed and not put any pressure on the players, the young players that start have to enjoy it.

“We want to get the ball down and play, Stoke will make changes but they have a squad full of quality players.

“I’ve watched Stoke’s first round tie as we imagine the side will be similar, as I said they’ve got a really good squad no matter who plays.”

On his long-term planning:

“Every decision I’m making is for the benefit of the football club moving forward.

“We could have signed more players with the budget but then you end up stock-piling players who aren’t as good as the ones we’ve brought in.

“We’ve got really good foundations and the makings of a strong squad, once we get the injured lads back we become a different animal.”
