Wellens: we have to be more ruthless

16 August 2021

Richie Wellens says his team need to be more ruthless at the top end of the pitch when they take on Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night.

Rovers travel to the Wham Stadium searching for their first win of the season in Sky Bet League One.

On persevering with the way he wants the team to play:

“We have to be more intent and driven on scoring goals, players need to sprint into the box instead of just jogging.

“If you keep making the runs the ball will find you, we’re a good passing team but we need players gambling in the area.

“We can coach the players the way we want to play, but I can’t teach them to want to score goals.”

On Accrington Stanley as a team:

“They’ve only missed out on the play-offs by small margins in the past couple of seasons.

“The pitch should be good but it’s still a very difficult place to go, they’re a physical team and won’t give us time on the ball.

“We need to go there wanting to play football but knowing we need to earn the right to do so first.”

On the job done by opposite number John Coleman:

“He’s done a brilliant job and been given the time to build a team and relationships within the club.

“Every single player at the club has been brought in by one manager, which gives them that continuity and stability.

“They’ve had a good start and it will be a really tough game for us.”
