Gary McSheffrey spoke to the media ahead of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup second round tie against Mansfield Town.
McSheffrey takes charge of the team for the first time since being appointed as caretaker manager on Thursday.
On his appointment and first day of training:
“You never expect to be in this situation and it’s disappointing for people to lose their jobs but it’s football and I’ve been asked to help on a short-term basis.
“I’ve tried to remind the players that they’ve come this far in their life and they haven’t become bad players overnight.
“Some individuals needed an arm around the shoulder and the message really has been about trying to play with the shackles off and not worry about making mistakes.”
On encouraging the players:
“The players need guidance and I think we have to accept there will be mistakes but the most important thing is how you react, that is the biggest difference.
“I want to try and take the pressure off them a little bit and encourage them not to fear playing the game.
“These lads dedicate their life to football and they need to try and rise to the challenge and pressure they’re under.”
On facing Mansfield:
“They’ve picked up in form recently and have momentum, it was a tough start for them but they’re on a great run.
“They’ll be coming here full of confidence and I’m sure Nigel Clough will be pleased with how they’re playing, but we’re the home team and we have to give everything for the shirt.
“We have to be aggressive and make sure we cover every blade of grass to get the result.”
