Officials confirmed for Sunderland

22 December 2021

Bobby Madley will be the man in charge when Rovers face Sunderland in the televised fixture on December 27.

Former Premier League referee Madley rose incredibly quickly through the refereeing ranks and was one of the youngest officials ever to referee at the top-flight which he did between 2013 and 2018.

In August 2018, he left PGMOL spending time refereeing Norway and was an official at the six-a-side World Cup.

In February 2020, it was agreed that he would return to refereeing in England and in the summer of that year he re-joined to the National List of Referees. 2021/22 marks the 36-year-old’s second campaign overseeing League One and Two matches since his return and Monday’s game will be the second time he has blown the whistle at a Rovers match.

The man from West Yorkshire has taken charge of twenty matches so far this season handing out 65 yellow cards and three reds. Among these matches, he was in charge for opponents’ Sunderland’s 2-1 home win over Wigan Athletic – he gave out five yellow cards on that day with just one going to the Black Cats. He also awarded the home side a penalty which Aiden McGeady converted.

On Monday, Madley will be assisted by David Avent and Anthony Moore. Trevor Kettle will the fourth official.
