Rowe: They’ve joked about being good cop, bad cop

31 December 2021

Tommy Rowe believes newly appointed management duo Gary McSheffrey and Frank Sinclair strike a good balance in their approach to leading the first team.

McSheffrey was announced as permanent manager on Wednesday while Sinclair was confirmed as his assistant on Thursday.

“Together, they work really well,” said Rowe.

“They’ve joked about being good cop, bad cop but Frank’s the organiser and you can see that from the way he was as a player. He brings a lot of communication.

“You can see with Gary that he’s very calm with the way he speaks and his thought process. He sees things that the players might not see – he brings little key things that help the group.”

McSheffrey and Sinclair inherited an injury-hit Rovers squad with young players being asked to shoulder massive responsibility. On Monday, the pair named a starting XI with seven players aged 23 or under including three teenagers, but Rowe believes McSheffrey is the man to get the best out of the young players.

“The communication from Gary and Frank really helps us, and I think it will continue to do so in the upcoming games. I think together they work well and with this group, they communicate really well,” Rowe added.

“I think he’s done so well in terms of getting to know what this group of players needs and how to communicate with this group of players.

“It’s not always easy to work with young players so to get the confidence and the bravery out of them is important – at times we’ve had that, and the more we have that we’ll get more match winners from the young lads.

“I’ve got commonalities with the manager, I played with him, so I know what he’s like as a person and a player and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with him.”
