Tournament winners to represent Doncaster Rovers in regional stages of the EFL Cups

18 December 2021

Local schools across Doncaster have been demonstrating their footballing talent in the Foundation’s EFL Kids Cup Tournaments. The prize is an opportunity to represent Doncaster Rovers in the regional finals hosted by Sheffield United Community Foundation and Accrington Stanley Community Trust.

Tuesday, December 7 saw Sherburn High School and Trinity Academy battle it out in the Girls Cup local division final. With a spectacular winning strike, Trinity Academy sealed the deal having already shown fantastic form in the initial stages of the tournament. Sherburn will now begin preparations for the area final of the EFL Girls Cup at Sheffield United.

The victors of the EFL Kids Cup local final were set in stone on Saturday December 11, where Shaw Wood Academy were successful in their clash against St. Peter’s, securing progression to the regional final at Accrington Stanley.

The score line was close, with Shaw Wood scoring the winning goal within the final two minutes of play. Following an exciting display of football, Shaw Wood will also represent Doncaster Rovers in the next stages of the nationwide tournament for the EFL Kids Cup.

All of the finalists experienced playing at the home of Doncaster Rovers, prior to pre-match warm-ups which was an invaluable experience with ticket holders beginning to arrive, providing a great atmosphere for the players.

Dave Potts, head of physical education at Trinity Academy, commented: “There has been a real buzz around the school in the build up to this final and we are so happy to be representing Doncaster Rovers at Accrington. The schools’ provision that the Foundation offers has been great for our participation levels.”

Sports development officer Heather King said: “The EFL cups that we ran this year are always a massive success with schools throughout Doncaster and the surrounding areas.

“This year, the Girls Cup has been our biggest Girls Cup to date. Having the tournament final held on the Doncaster Rovers pitch was fantastic. We’ve had such positive feedback from children and staff on both tournaments, on how well they went and how great it is to be taking part in competitions again. We wish both Shaw Wood (EFL Kids Cup winners) and Trinity Academy (EFL Girls Cup winners) the best of luck as they progress onto the next round representing Doncaster Rovers!”

The nationwide EFL Girls Cup will culminate at Wembley Stadium in April 2022, with the EFL Kids Cup nationwide finals taking place across the Sky Bet EFL Play-Off weekend in May 2022.
