Rovers’ U18 captain Ethan Bojang has been called up to The Gambia’s U20 squad for the upcoming Africa U20 Cup of Nations.

He flies out to host country Mauritania on January 30 2021 to join up with his teammates who will come from Academies such as West Ham United and Roma.

The competition runs from February 14 – March 6 2021 and The Gambia U20s will face Ghana, Tanzania and Morocco in their group.

2021 marks the first time the competition will have 12 teams and the third time The Gambia have competed. The country’s best performance so far at the tournament was a third placed finish in 2007.

Bojang was delighted with his first call up after missing out on international duty in October due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s an honour to be called up, I was over the moon,” he said.

“I’m just looking forward to getting over there and getting started.

“The first thing will be to settle in because it’s a new team but I’m just looking to settle and get going. I know a few of the lads already, I’ve spoken to them before.”

Bojang is the third Rovers Academy graduate to be selected for international duty this season following in the footsteps of Danny Amos and Liam Ravenhill who were involved with Northern Ireland U21s European Championship campaign.

“I spoke to Danny and he said what a good experience it is representing your country,” he added.

“I’m close to Ravs and he says he’s enjoyed his time away so I’m looking forward to it.

“I want to enjoy it and perform well but I play football to win so we’ll see what we can do.”
