James: Cup run has been brilliant

24 January 2021

Reece James believes Rovers can take pride from their Emirates FA Cup journey which ended in defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Rovers were undone in the fourth round by a professional performance from the Premier League side which ended in a 4-0 defeat in the capital.

“We could have probably put more pressure on the ball at times and could have been a bit braver in possession of the ball,” James said.

“We’ve come to a Premier League team and not changed the way that we play and on a couple of occasions we played through the lines and looked a good side and that’s something positive we’ve got to take out of this and into the league games.

“It was an unbelievable experience playing against some top players like Mark Noble who’s been in the Premier League for years and international players like Soucek - they’re outstanding.  You see the quality of the players like that and the movement they have is so hard to defend against.”

Rovers saw off FC United of Manchester, Carlisle United and Blackburn Rovers to progress to the fourth round for just the second time in a decade.

“The cup run has been brilliant,” James added.

“I think we’ve done really well as a club and with the win that we had at Blackburn Rovers which showed we can definitely make the step up in level was a massive positive.

“It’s been a great experience and to come to a stadium and place like this was really enjoyable.

“In the changing room, we’ve said we’ve had a good run but the main thing now is to focus on the league and make sure we put things right.”
