RIP Ernie Moss and Mick Bates

12 July 2021

Everyone at Rovers was saddened to hear of the passing of former players Mick Bates and Ernie Moss who both played for the club in the early 1980s.

Bates, who was born in Armthorpe, spent most of his career at Leeds United and in 2019 was given the freedom of the city of Leeds along with many of his team-mates from his time at Elland Road for his exploits in the 1970s. He had one season with Rovers before retiring.

Moss’ 17 goals in the 1983/84 season helped fire Rovers to the Division Three title. He went on to play for a number of clubs, most notably Chesterfield where he remains the club’s record goal scorer finding the net 192 times across three spells.
