Rovers sign Arsenal's Smith on loan

5 July 2021

Rovers have completed the signing of midfielder Matt Smith on a season-long loan from Premier League side Arsenal.

The 20-year-old came through the ranks with the Gunners and was named on the bench for the Emirates FA Cup final against Chelsea in 2020.

Smith operates as a deep-lying playmaker, controlling the tempo of games and picking out runners in the final third.

He joined Swindon Town on loan last summer and played under Rovers boss Richie Wellens, before joining fellow Sky Bet League One side Charlton Athletic in January.

Smith made a combined 32 appearances in League One last season, and will hope to develop his game further in his second season in the EFL.

He becomes the club’s fifth new signing of the summer so far, after the additions of Ben Close, Kyle Knoyle, Ro-Shaun Williams and Tommy Rowe.
