Wellens delighted with Cukur addition

Richie Wellens believes Tiago Cukur will bring physicality, skill and goals as the forward completed the signing of a season-long loan from Watford on Monday.

The 18-year-old has impressed in the Hornet’s U23s side since joining them in January and the Rovers manager says the youngster will have no problem adapting to Sky Bet League One.

“He’s got good feet but can score from crosses. He’s a talented boy and we can’t wait to start working with him,” said Wellens.

“Usually with an 18-year-old from the U23s the worry is that he find it tough physically, but I don’t see that being a problem with him. He’s big and aggressive in his play.

“Even though he’s young, he’ll bring physicality. We’ve looked at him and everyone we’ve spoken to speaks very highly of him.

“We think we’ve got a rough diamond and we’ll be able to bring the best out of him.”

Cukur had plenty of suitors, but Wellens was determined to bring the Turkish youth international to the Keepmoat Stadium and even went to see him to ensure the deal was done.

“I went down to Watford to get that personal touch because we couldn’t compete financially with what some of the other clubs were offering,” added Wellens.

“We’ve got him through the door, and I’m really excited about him.

“I think he can play as a 10, as an out-and-out forward, or off the left so he gives us options.”
