“It’s a good start for us. We know it’s a pre-season game, but we still wanted to make a statement in terms of where we start and I thought we did that,” said Wellens.

“It was a really professional performance and in terms of where we’re at, it was probably better than I would have expected.”

Wellens made his sixth new signing of the summer before the match against Rossington making for a very new squad, but the manager says he has been impressed with his players’ ability to take on information and adapt to the new style of play.

“We’re trying to get a lot of ideas into the players in a short space of time, but I was pleased to see the bits we’ve been drip feeding in so far have been taken on board,” he said.

“Some of our passing and movement was very good and the second half team came out and continued that. It’s always difficult when you change a whole team at half-time but everyone has come out of this game with real credit.”
