Richie Wellens said he was delighted to get key target Matt Smith through the door.
Smith was on loan at Swindon Town under Wellens, so the manager knows all about the young Arsenal player and believes he has the potential to develop at Rovers.
“When I first signed him at Swindon you could tell it was his first loan but after five or six weeks he was up to speed and he was the best player we had,” he said.
“He played a lot of games for me and his development was pretty rapid. I think the pitch here at Doncaster and the style of football we want to play will help him a lot and with better players around him he’ll come on even more.”
Smith will slot into the midfield alongside Wellens first summer signing Ben Close, but the manager believes the 20-year-old will add something different.
“He’s a good kid and with him and Ben Close in the middle – they will really complement each other,” he added.
“Smith will go in there add legs and help break things up when we are expansive.”
