Wellens: Wakefield workout a good one

21 July 2021

Richie Wellens felt the 6-0 victory over Wakefield AFC was a good pre-season workout for his side.

The likes of Louis Jones, Tom Anderson, Tommy Rowe and Ben Close all got minutes at the Millenium Stadium, while there were also outings for youngsters Lirak Hasani, Branden Horton, AJ Greaves and Liam Ravenhill.

New loan signing Tiago Cukur played almost an hour in his first appearance for the club, proving to be a constant handful for the Wakefield defence.

Wellens said: “I think it took us 25 minutes to get going, it was a difficult evening with the heat and a dry pitch but I thought we were still too slow early on.

“It doesn’t matter what team you play against, we want to be difficult to break down while also finding ways to play through the opposition.

“We were looking to play through lines and give the players that freedom to move into different areas, our tempo lifted as the game went on.”

Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium to take on Premier League side Newcastle United on Friday, where Wellens is hoping to have more of his senior players available.

He added: “We’re hoping to get a bit of work into the lads that have been self-isolating, we’ll look to pick as strong a team as possible but also we’re aware of the fact they haven’t played football for 10 days.

“They need minutes because we’re two weeks away from the season, anyone with any issues won’t be risked but we’re hoping to be a lot stronger.

Supporters attending Rovers' pre-season friendlies against Newcastle United and Sheffield United are advised to purchase tickets in advance where possible as there will be no cash gates.
