Butler sings Coppinger's praises

7 May 2021

Andy Butler has paid tribute to James Coppinger as he prepares to play his final game for Rovers this weekend.

Coppinger will make appearance number 695 against Peterborough United on Sunday, and Butler is hoping he can be sent off in style.

He said: “We want Copps to sign off with a victory at the Keepmoat, he’s been an unbelievable servant to the football club and everyone speaks so highly of him.

“He’s got his head screwed on and gives everything for the cause, he’s quick to help out younger lads whenever he can.

“For the majority of his career he’s probably been one of the first names on the teamsheet, he’s an example for every young player.”

After playing alongside him for the latter stages of Coppinger’s career, Butler says he deserves every accolade that comes his way.

He added: “He’s got so many awards over the years and he deserves every single one of them, I’m sure we’ll give him the best possible send off.

“If you look at the important goals he’s scored down the years he has always stepped up when the club needed him.

“It’s difficult in modern football for one player to stay at a club for so long, and to still be doing it at 40 is incredible.”
