Wellens on Papa John's Trophy tie

8 November 2021

Richie Wellens spoke to the media ahead of the Papa John’s Trophy tie at Scunthorpe United on Tuesday night.

Rovers head to the Sands Venue Stadium knowing a draw would be enough to progress in the competition.

On younger players getting an opportunity:

“There are 15 players missing from training on Monday, we’re waiting for updates from the lads who took knocks at the weekend.

“They’re being monitored and we’ll see how they are, but there are some players who won’t be risked.

“Young players will get a chance to impress, we’ve had a lot of them down to the training ground recently so it will feel familiar for them.”

On what he expects from the game:

“You would imagine there will be a smaller crowd which will take the pressure off some of our younger players.

“The main thing for us is that we get through, if you can progress through the group you’re a few games from Wembley.

“This is the only cup competition we can realistically win so it’s a big opportunity for teams in League One and Two.”
