Wellens: we lacked experience

28 November 2021

Richie Wellens spoke to the media after Rovers were beaten 2-0 by Burton Albion in Sky Bet League One.

Wellens felt the home side’s experience made the difference after second-half goals from Tom O’Connor and Daniel Jebbison.

On not handling the conditions well enough:

“They are good at what they do and they played the conditions better than us, we found it difficult to defend in the areas they played in.

“The lack of experience within our team was evident in conceding the free kick for the first goal.

“The players tried their best but even when we got the ball down we didn’t use it well enough.”

On lacking personnel:

“Unfortunately with the lack of bodies we can’t play the way I want my team to, so I get the frustration because I am just as frustrated.

“When you’re asking five or six players who are still finding their way in league football to play every week it’s very difficult.

“We’re chopping and changing every week because we’re losing players regularly so we haven’t got that continuity.”
