U18s manager Gary McSheffrey praised his side for their battling performance against league leaders Rotherham United.

Goals either side of the half from Jack Raper and Owen Scattergood secured three points in an excellent game for Rovers’ U18s.

McSheffrey said: “Rotherham are a physically strong side and they love to play off second balls. I thought the lads rolled their sleeves up and were really professional in what they did.

“We bettered Rotherham’s work ethic and found two bits of quality in the game to get us our goals.

“In the first-half we were knocking on the door with some good attacks and entries into the final third.

“I was delighted with the lads in their work ethic, battle and how they dealt with a difficult Rotherham side.”

Owen Scattergood returned from injury to continue his goal-scoring form for the U18s.

McSheffrey added: “Owen’s a tidy player and he knows how to score goals. He brought composure to our game when he came on.

“He reads the game well and has great link-up play with whoever his partner is upfront.

“He plays off shoulders and got onto a good through ball from Will Green and finished it well.”
