Wellens: not good enough

31 October 2021

Richie Wellens spoke to the media following the disappointing defeat at Charlton Athletic.

Wellens felt his side never got going at the Valley, and were made to pay for a lacklustre performance.

On having no excuses:

“We didn’t compete, Jayden Stockley won every header in both boxes and had an easy ride.

“When you come to a ground where the team you’re up against are in transition, you have to start better than we did.

“There are no excuses from us, we were second best and didn’t earn the right to play.

“We gave away silly free kicks, and everything we spoke about in and out of possession went out of the window.”

On learning quickly and preparing for Crewe:

“They are a good side but we allowed them to be better, all four of their goals have come from us having the ball.

“There’s no point in feeling sorry for ourselves, we’ve got a lot of young players that have to realise every game is not the same.

“We’ve got a massive game on Tuesday night against Crewe and that is important with a break in league games after it.”
