Ben Speedie will be the man in charge when Rovers host Rotherham United in the Papa John’s Trophy.
It will be just the second time the Merseyside man has overseen a Rovers match since he was promoted to the national list of referees in the summer of 2020. He oversaw a 1-0 defeat away to Crewe Alexandra at the tail end of the 2020/21 season.
He has taken charge of five games so far this season handing out 17 yellow cards and no reds – seven of these coming in Salford City’s 3-0 win over Newport County last time out.
