Officials confirmed for Wigan Athletic

9 September 2021

Tom Nield will be the man in charge when Rovers travel to Wigan Athletic this weekend.

The West Yorkshire based man was promoted to the National List of Referees in 2017 but made national headlines as he was forced to step back from his officiating duties during the 2019/20 campaign - his other role as an nurse calling him to the NHS front line during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This will the fourth time Nield has overseen a Rovers game. He’s previously presided over a 2-1 home league win over Luton Town in 2018, a 2-0 away defeat to Oldham Athletic in the Papa John’s Trophy last term, and a 0-0 draw with Northampton Town at home in March 2021.

Saturday will mark just the fifth time Nield has taken charge of a match in the current campaign. He has so far issued 18 yellow cards but no reds. Seven of these yellows came in the previous match he took charge of – a 1-0 home win for Cambridge United against Bolton Wanderers in Sky Bet League One. The U's picked up four bookings while Bolton had three.

On Saturday, Nield will be assisted by Oliver Bickle and Lee Freeman. Anthony Moore will be the fourth official.
