REPORT | Rovers 1 Morecambe 0

18 September 2021

Tommy Rowe hands Rovers their first home win of the 2021/22 season.

Captain Tom Anderson returned to the starting XI after a brief spell on the side lines.

The game started off balanced with neither goalkeeper being tested. Morecambe’s Jokull Andresson was called into action at one point when he had to get down to his near post to deny Rodrigo Vilca from an acute angle. The Newcastle loanee was later involved in action for Rovers winning a corner from a threatening cross.

Joe Dodoo on the 17th minute was next to test Andresson after a deflection from a defender took the power out of his shot, making it an easy save in the end for the Icelandic international.

Rovers were unfortunate not to score from a corner as the ball fell to Dodoo, who turned but by time he could pull the trigger two Shrimp defenders had smothered him blocking any shot he could take.

For the final 15 minutes of the first-half Morecambe started to grow into the game more. They had their first chance of the game when Wes McDonald found a way through Rovers’ defence but the number seven could not beat Pontus Dahlberg who was quick off his line.

Later Shane McLoughlin from 30-yards forced a stretching save from Dahlberg.

At half-time it remained goalless with all still to play for.

Tommy Rowe had a two big chances as the second-half started. Originally his first shot was tipped round the bar before Ryan Cooney cleared the ball off the line after Rowe’s shot from the resulting corner.

Morecambe’s top goal scorer Cole Stockton saw one of his efforts blocked by his own teammate as the visitors started to grow back into the game.

Substitute Tiago Cukur and then Vilca had two chances which they did not quite time correctly, but as the ball fell outside the box to Ethan Galbraith the Manchester United loanee forced a save out of Andresson.
Cukur was later involved in another chance but was unable to get the ball to settle at his feet.

Rovers took the lead on the 81st minute through Tommy Rowe after he got on the end of a marvellous corner from Ben Close.

Richie Wellens' side did well to see the rest of the game out ensuring they claimed their first three points of the Sky Bet League One 2021/22 season.
