Wellens delighted with first win

19 September 2021

Richie Wellens spoke to the media to give his assessment of the 1-0 win over Morecambe in Sky Bet League One.

Tommy Rowe’s late header secured the manager’s first league victory in charge at the Keepmoat Stadium.

On the performance:

“I thought for the first 15 minutes we were very good, and then for the next half-an-hour we lacked energy and it became a struggle.

“Second-half before the goal we were the best team, and once we went ahead we just had to protect what we had.

“We’ve worked all week and looked really good, we didn’t have as much possession as we would have liked but we wanted to attack with intent.”

On doing the basics:

“We’ve won a football match because we did the basics well, it wasn’t pretty at times but the win gives us confidence.

“We’ve had two cleared off the line and a couple of good openings, but the final bit let us down.

“I love seeing footballers develop and it’s great to see them working hard to win a game.

“We’ll come in on Monday morning and continue to work on the basics, as that’s what gets you results.”
