Wellens reacts to Rotherham defeat

8 September 2021

Richie Wellens gave his assessment after Rovers were beaten by Rotherham United in the Papa John’s Trophy.

The Millers ran out 6-0 winners at the Keepmoat Stadium.

On his disappointment:

“We had three good chances that we didn’t take and made mistakes at the back too many times.

“The score-line was harsh at half-time but as the game went on they had more experience on the pitch and we suffered for it.

“The first-half was the most threatening we’ve looked this season, we just lacked the finishing touch.

“We get three players into the team and then we’re still without Tom Anderson and Cameron John which is just how it’s going.”

On the importance of sticking together:

“It’s been tough because of the players we haven’t had available but we have to dig in for the next few weeks.

“We showed a reaction towards the end of the first-half, but it’s so important to score when you’re on top.

“There are stages in any game where you come under pressure, we can’t crumble every time a team gets on top.”
