Wellens: We need to dig in and fight for the points

9 September 2021

Rovers return to Sky Bet League action on Saturday after a two-week absence due to the international break.

Richie Wellen’s side travel to in-form Wigan Athletic in search of their first win in the current campaign and the mananger sat down with the press to discuss the game ahead.

On Wigan Athletic:

“We’re having a rough patch at the moment, but we need to dig in and go out and fight for the points on Saturday.

“Wigan have recruited really well. They’ve brought it players who have played hundreds of games at this level and in Charlie Wyke they have one of the top three strikers in the division.

“They’re a physical team. They’re strong and resolute so they can stay in games and with the firepower of Jones, Lang, Wyke and Kean there’s always a goal threat.”

On injuries:

“Jon Taylor and Fejiri Okenabirhie aren’t in my thinking for this weekend.

“Cameron John’s scan has come back, and he’s got a small fracture so he’ll be out for the next few games, Tom Anderson won’t make it back for this weekend, but Kyle Knoyle will be ok.

“The chairman has been great. I spoke to him and Gavin Baldwin this morning and they’ve given us a bit of scope to bring someone in to replace Cam as we’ve currently only got one fit centre back.

“I haven’t had the chance to play something remotely near my strongest team yet, but the season will change for us and we’ll get these players back.”

On Joe Dodoo, Rodrigo Vilca, and Jordy Hiwula:

“I think those three coming through their 60 minutes on Tuesday was probably the most important thing.  It made us considerably weaker when they came off.

“It tends to happen that players go back to their old team and score so hopefully Joe does that this weekend but the main thing for those three lads is to get them up to speed as quickly as possible. We don’t want to max them out too much in one game and then lose them.

“I thought Rodrigo looked really sharp. He hasn’t played a professional game yet so I thought he did great for his professional debut.”
