Rovers get off to a positive start in the Papa John's Trophy competition with a penalty shoot-out win in the first fixture of the group stage.

For 90 minutes, Rovers kept Newcastle at bay with Louis Jones keeping a clean sheet on his first start of the season. He also helped with a strong performance in the shoot-out, by saving Jay Turner-Cooke's spot kick.

Jon Taylor played his first 45 minutes of the season after rehab from an injury picked up against Armthorpe Welfare in pre-season.

The game provided an opportunity for U18 players Jack Goodman, Jak Whiting and Jack Raper to get valuable minutes under their belts. While second-year scholars Alex Fletcher and Charlie Petch were unused substitutes.

On the target from the penalty spot for Rovers were Kyle Hurst, Charlie Seaman, Adam Long and Kieran Agard.
