McSheffrey pleased with work ethic

31 August 2022

Gary McSheffrey was pleased to see his side claim come out on top in the penalty shootout after a goalless draw against Newcastle U21s in 90 minutes.

Rovers picked up an extra point in their opening Papa John’s Trophy group stage game after scoring all four of their spot-kicks at the Eco-Power Stadium.

On the performance:

“I thought it was a good, honest performance from us. The lads worked hard and gave us everything and battled to a clean sheet.

“It’s those good habits again and get the win in the shootout, credit to the lads who stepped up and scored because it’s not always easy.

“It was a young side for us against a Category 1 Academy so we were coming up against a team full of quality but I thought we stood up to them well.”

On a return for Jon Taylor and two debuts for Academy players:

“We were looking for individuals to get some minutes under their belt. Jon Taylor came back and three youth team players got on the pitch as well.

“I thought he looked good and we could have given him a little bit longer but we have to be realistic and 45 minutes was always the plan.

“We’re pleased he got through it, he was a threat in behind and got into some dangerous areas. We’re happy with his contribution and he’s worked really hard to get back fit.

“This competition is all about giving young players a chance. Jack Raper and Jak Whiting will cherish their debuts and it will be really good for their future.”
