McSheffrey focused on progression against the Imps

8 August 2022

Gary McSheffrey is focused on Rovers building momentum as they begin the Carabao Cup campaign against Lincoln City on Tuesday.

Rovers will host the Imps in the first round tie at the Eco-Power Stadium and first team manager McSheffrey is looking for his side to continue the positive start to the campaign.

McSheffrey on the test of Lincoln City:

“They’re coming here on the back of two draws so they’ll be itching to get the first win of the season.

“It’s going to be a difficult game against a good team that play good, expansive football to really make the pitch big in possession.

“We’ll have to be defensively sound and solid and on the ball we’ll have to be better than we were at the weekend to counterattack and play through them.”

On looking for progress in the cup:

“It’s something we want to get through. We want to win games of football and keep the good habits.

“There’s a potential good draw in the next round as well.

“We go into the game looking to get through.”

On belief in the camp:

“They’re good traits to have and it’s what we’ve been trying to instil into the lads.

“We’ve shown a good resilience and a hard-to-beat attitude.

“We rode our luck a bit on Saturday. They missed some chances.

“But ultimately we found a way and I said fair play to the lads for doing that.

“Now we’re looking to build on that with our own performance level on the ball.

“But it’s good to know the lads have got a bit of resilience and belief about them.

“It sends a little message to other teams that if you’re 1-0 up against Doncaster, the game isn’t over.”

On selection for Tuesday’s game:

“We will make a few changes. Not a load.

“We want to keep momentum building, forge relationships in the team.

“We want some stability and some consistency in the team as well so that’s important to us.”
