McSheffrey wants 'game on Rovers' terms' against Stockport

15 August 2022

Gary McSheffrey is determined that Rovers play the game ‘on their terms’ as they host Stockport County on Tuesday night.

McSheffrey is expecting a tough test at the Eco-Power Stadium against another side tipped to challenge for promotion from Sky Bet League Two.

McSheffrey on not yet going ahead in a match this season:

“We had quite a smooth pre-season and only went behind against Spennymoor.

“We’ve gone behind in every game so far apart from the 0-0 draw but it’s showed that we can respond the right way, with the right character.

“If we can keep guaranteeing that we don’t lose games then the comebacks are all good because we’ll get our time and moments where it’s on our terms and we’re comfortable in games.”

On the test of Stockport:

“I watched Stockport a few times towards the end of last season. They finished the season really well.

“They work really hard, they press well, they’ve got a good intensity about them. They’ve added a few players to the bulk that they had last season. They’ve got a real good work ethic.

“They have two good goalscorers in [Paddy] Madden and [Kyle] Wootton that have scored lots of goals. They are a threat and they have high energy in midfield.

“We’ll have to be at our best, move the ball well and make sure the game is played on our terms.”

On striker Paddy Madden:

“He’s had a really good career. I played with him at Scunthorpe when he came from Yeovil. He got the goal at Wembley and never lets anyone forget that.

“He guarantees you 15 a season at League One or League Two level.

“He’s one that we’re going to have to keep an eye on and try to nullify but he often finds a way.

“Stockport have got other strengths that we have to be on our game to deal with.”

On his players ‘believing in the process’:

“Some people have been playing with a little bit of fear so far this season and I think you can tell with some of the performances.

“We’ve got away with it in terms of results but we can be better.

“When I say believe in the process it’s probably about being disciplined in your shape and your position and trust the ball will come. People go roaming a bit and it can look off the cuff.

“That will come. Different personnel have started different games but when we get the proper numbers and the lads are fit, you can nail it down until it becomes telepathic.

“When you’re chopping and changing and trying to get your best XI out there, it can be difficult to get the fluency.

“There will be a time coming where it’ll be really fluent and we’ll look a really good team.”
