McSheffrey excited for opening home game

5 August 2022

Rovers are relishing the prospect of running out in front of home support for the first time as they host Sutton United according to Gary McSheffrey.

Sutton are the first visitors to the Eco-Power Stadium this term, with Rovers looking to follow up last weekend’s hard-earned point at Bradford City with a victory.

And first team manager McSheffrey believes building on their opening day efforts this weekend against Sutton would represent a strong start to the season.

McSheffrey on kicking off the home campaign:

“We can’t wait for it.

“We had a couple of good friendlies here against Huddersfield and Rotherham and we’re looking forward to this one.

“Sutton are a good team and were probably the shock team of the division last season, coming up and doing so well and getting to the Papa John’s Trophy final.

“It’ll be a tough game against a very workmanlike team, really fit, well-organised and they’ve got some very dangerous players.

“We’ll have to be at our best to get what we want from this game.

“We’ve made no secret of what we want to do at home this season. It would mean the world to get off to a winning start at home.

“And it would make last week’s point a lot more valuable as well. We want to follow that up with a win.”

On Tom Anderson’s return:

“We weren’t expecting Tom back that quickly, we chucked him in and said he might be called upon for the last ten minutes or so if we needed him.

“It was strange with how it happened because it was almost exactly what we’d spoken about on the Thursday.

“They brought the big fella on [Andy] Cook, who was gamey, a good striker so we felt we had to match them up with three centre backs.

“Tom was excellent. We watched his clips and for the ten to 12 minutes that he was on the pitch he was superb with his body contact, defending crosses and organisation skills between the two centre backs. We were delighted with his performance.

“He’s trained a couple of times this week and we’ll try and bed him in.”
