McSheffrey relishing Salford challenge

18 August 2022

Rovers boss Gary McSheffrey is relishing the challenge of facing early league leaders Salford City.

Salford are top of Sky Bet League Two after winning three and drawing one of their opening matches.

McSheffrey said: “Salford have started the season well. They have Neil Wood as their manager who is a good young coach. I played with him during our time at Coventry.

“Neil has got them playing well, and they have obvious threats in their team.

“They have pace across their attacking front line. And their squad contains experienced players who help keep things really organised.

“We have seen they are fluid in what they do and can mix their formations up. I am expecting a really good game, and I am looking forward to it.

“They are going to be a tough test for us.”

Rovers themselves have had a positive start to the season, winning two and drawing two. With performances improving match-by-match, McSheffrey is encouraged by what he has seen.

McSheffrey added: “It is always nice getting points on the board, but you want performances too. That will come. For some of the games, it has been points over performance.

“I have not gone into many games a manager, even from the U23s days, where my team has been the favourite to win. That makes it hard to implement an exciting, expansive style of play.

"But people are starting to see what this team is capable of and are starting to believe. We have something good developing here."
