McSheffrey: we showed a lot of quality

17 August 2022

Rovers boss Gary McSheffrey thought his side produced plenty of quality in the convincing 2-1 win over Stockport County.

Goals from George Miller and Kieran Agard made it four games unbeaten for McSheffrey’s men in Sky Bet League Two.

For the majority of the match, Rovers were playing against ten men with Stockport’s Macualey Southam-Hales seeing red only 20 minutes in.

He said: “Them going down to 10-men allowed us to work on our quality on the ball and create some chances.

“I thought it was a good game. If we didn’t get the goal and it finished 1-1, it would have been devastating. But I think people would’ve appreciated the effort and the attempts to win the ball.”

Rovers recorded 20 shots on goal but had to wait until the 91st minute to score the winning goal and McSheffrey hailed his side's persistence.

He added: “We left it late again, but their goalkeeper put in a brilliant display, and we’ve peppered the woodwork throughout the game.

“We had some sitters in the second-half so it was good to see the lads continuing to believe and get that winning goal.

“Stockport can be hard to break down so I am delighted we managed to get the winner in the end.”

The match marked a Rovers debut for Luke Molyneux who signed from Hartlepool United in the summer. McSheffrey was delighted to see him return to action after his recovery from an impact injury picked up against Rotherham United in pre-season.

He said: “I was debating when to put him on. He’s been training for a couple of days, but it’s hard when you come up against opposition who aren't going to go easy on him. I'm glad he's come through the game unscathed.

“He’s trained well and scores lots of goals in training which meant I could not keep him off the bench against Stockport.”
