Mitchell not taking number one shirt for granted

16 August 2022

Goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell will not rest on his laurels after starting the season as Rovers’ first choice keeper.

Mitchell is looking for a fifth straight start for Rovers this term as Stockport County visit the Eco-Power Stadium on Tuesday.

On another dramatic finish at Wimbledon:

“We were just chasing the result again.

“I went up for the corner, trying to be a nuisance and a threat. It’s the first time I’ve been up there for a proper goal celebration.

“There was plenty to improve on going into the next game.

“It’s great character from the lads but we don’t want to be 2-0 down after 85 minutes every week.

“It’s been a solid start but we’re in ready to work and keep getting better.”

On being number one at the start of the season:

“I’ve got the shirt at the minute but that doesn’t mean I’ve got it forever.

“I’ve got to keep performing and doing my job. We’ve got a good group and we push each other on in the goalkeeping department.

“If my performances drop, it’s not just my shirt. Louis [Jones] is always there and we’re trying to make each other better in training every day with Benno [Ian Bennett, goalkeeping coach].”

On waiting patiently to be a starting goalkeeper:

“Partly it’s with the position. It tends to be one that you progress in later.

“I’ve just kept my head down, kept going.

“Things happen quickly in football. One day you can be somewhere, and the next somewhere else.

“I just take the good with the bad, try to remain level and keep going.”

On back-to-back home games:

“It’ll be good to get back there, after winning the last game.

“We want to be strong at home.”
