Pre-season preparations paying off for Green

First year scholar Will Green believes the hard work of pre-season is paying off after he scored a brace in the 5-1 victory over Hartlepool United.

Green scored a spectacular goal either side of the half-time break and further successes form Ethan Harrison and Jack Goodman saw Rovers cruise to victory over the Pools.

Despite being pleased with a thrilling performance that saw the hosts take their first three points of the 2022/23 season in their first game, Green felt there was still more to come from his side.

He said: “It’s been a really good start, for the last six weeks we’ve been building up to this one game, before we had a bit of nerves with the excitement for the new season but I think we dealt with that well.

“I thought that even though we’ve won 5-1 we could’ve won by more and kept a clean sheet but it wasn’t to be in the end.

“We’ve been building all summer for today and to win like that is great, I still think we can play better but we got the win and that’s what matters.”

Green’s two finishes were almost scored in identical fashion, helping to give Rovers clear daylight between themselves and the visitors and the youngster was happy to get amongst the goals.

He added: “My two goals were pretty similar today, the first one might not have gone in but it took a little deflection and took the ball away from the keeper and into the goal.

“The second one I was actually looking to see if there was a cross on but I realised I was quite close to the box so I just swung my right-foot at it and it flew into the top-right corner so it’s great to get on the scoresheet.”
